Bishop's Stortford firm Dotmatics has been acquired by Insightful Science in a move that is expected to see the combined company generate over $100m in annual revenue.

The deal, for an undisclosed sum, will enable over one million scientists in academic, corporate and government institutions around the world to improve research and lab efficiency.

Dotmatics was founded in 2005 by Stephen Gallagher and Alastair Hill, now chief executive and chief information officer respectively, to provide software and technology to support drug discovery and development. Its global headquarters are at The Old Monastery in Windhill.

It will be business as usual for staff at the Stortford premises following the transaction while Gallagher and Hill work closely with California-based Insightful Science's senior management team, including its chief executive Thomas Swalla, to grow the entire business.

"The number one challenge for pharmaceutical, biotech and chemical innovation companies today is how to manage the enormous volume – and promise – of data generated in labs," said Gallagher.

"This combination allows us to expand investments in our Dotmatics platform and strengthen our brand as a leading enterprise informatics solution provider. We will bring Insightful Science's leading biologics applications to our customers, further accelerating their discovery processes.

"In addition, we have the opportunity to bring the Dotmatics cloud and collaboration capabilities to the diverse community of over one million scientists already using Insightful Science tools."

Subject to the attainment of regulatory clearances, the transaction is expected to close by the end of June. Until closing, the companies will continue to operate independently.

Insightful Science's chief executive Swalla added: "We are beyond enthusiastic about the impact we can have on increasing the speed of scientific innovation and ultimately helping to make the world a healthier, cleaner and better place to live."
