Richard Kuyper appointed MD of Weston Business Centres
A long-standing employee of Weston Homes has been appointed managing director of subsidiary Weston Business Centres, which is set to double in size.
Richard Kuyper, a graduate in aerospace engineering who first learned about housing development on site as a humble handyman, has worked for Weston Homes since 2007. He joined the Takeley-based developer's board-level apprentice programme in 2013.
In his new role with Weston Business Centres Ltd, he will sit at the helm of the group's serviced office division as it expands over the next two years. Together, the Takeley and Colchester business centres have 22 employees and offer more than 65,000 square feet of serviced office space.
Takeley Business Centre, in Parsonage Road, is home to eight firms and has a 100 per cent occupancy rate. It also houses Weston Homes’ head office, which is due to move to new headquarters. Following its relocation, the building will be refurbished as serviced offices.
Richard’s interest in property development was sparked when he began renovating houses with a friend. His desire to learn the basics saw him leave his then employer in 2004, going on to work in multi-trade roles across sites in London, starting as a handyman.
In 2006, he studied for and qualified with an HNC in construction and joined Weston Homes the following year as a trainee site manager. In 2009, he was awarded Weston Homes’ Employee of the Year title, coinciding with his formal promotion to site manager of multiple schemes in Kent and Sussex.
In 2012, Richard successfully competed in a national campaign to become one of the first of two executive apprentices to Bob Weston, the company’s chairman and chief executive officer. The apprenticeship role saw Richard spend a few weeks in each department of the business, before tackling different company challenges to find innovative solutions, working directly with Bob himself.
Richard said: “My career at Weston Homes has allowed me to consistently push myself, with new challenges and responsibility. The company has a supportive environment and a genuine family feel despite growing numbers. Weston Homes encourages ambition and is an incredibly generous business, with its employees very well cared for and supported throughout.”
Describing Richard as “a brilliant example of an ambitious employee who represents Weston Homes’ key values”, Bob Weston said: “Weston Business Centres Ltd is set for a large expansion, with new headquarters to be constructed and further staff recruitmen. It’s a very exciting time to join the team.”
