Sawbridgeworth marketing company TOMD celebrates 20 years in business

A Sawbridgeworth-based marketing company which started as a one-man outfit in a small barn in Little Hadham has celebrated entering its third decade.

TOMD began life as The Outsourced Marketing Department in 1999, a start-up offering marketing support to small and medium-sized businesses.

Initially taking on a diverse range of clients, over the years the firm has focused on working with the financial, legal and accountancy sectors.

It has grown to a team of 20 and now supports over 1,500 businesses a year, including blue-chip multinationals with multi-million and billion-pound turnovers, from its offices at Allen House, off Station Road, overlooking the River Stort.

After merging with a sister business in 2015, the company was rebranded to TOMD last year.

“Fundamental to our growth has been the recruitment of key people with the expertise required to deliver results in the niche sectors we work in,” said Mike Johnstone, one of the company’s directors.

“We’ve also been responsive to changing client needs as the marketing landscape has evolved. For instance, we’re now seeing a huge upsurge in client demand for content and advanced technological solutions to publish it.

“Our next significant milestone will be the launch of our new marketing and content distribution platform, which will provide a wide range of easy-to-use content solutions for our clients.”

Growing demand for content means TOMD has become a prolific publisher, producing more than 250,000 words a year across 100 titles.

It also specialises in web design and has to date built and hosted over 700 client websites, as well as working closely with firms as their outsourced marketing department, offering bespoke support that ranges from producing blog posts and articles, to designing and printing company brochures, to managing their social media accounts and everything in between.

“We’ve developed close bonds with many of the clients we work with and have relationships with some of them going back over 15 years,” said Mike. “I think that’s because many of the firms we work with don’t see us as an external marketing agency but as colleagues who care as much as they do about the future of their business.

“We’re always looking to progress, develop and provide the best possible support to the firms we work with.

“We’re very proud of what we’ve achieved so far and are grateful to all our clients, suppliers and especially staff, who have contributed enormously to the business.”
