Japanese restaurant company Wagamama has disappointed hundreds of fans in Bishop's Stortford by ruling out opening in the town - but it looks like we could be getting a branch of another Asian eatery chain.

In the wake of North Street Mexican Chimichanga hitting the wall last weekend and the clamour from hundreds of our Facebook followers for Wagamama to fill the void, a spokesperson for the chain said: “We currently have no plans to open in Bishop’s Stortford.”

But according to food and drinks industry website Big Hospitality, Thai chain Giggling Squid is to spread its tentacles by opening in Stortford – one of six new outlets it plans to launch in 2018, two of them in Hertfordshire.

The group, which was founded in Hove in 2009, will also open in Harpenden as well as Beaconsfield in Bucks, Cheltenham in Gloucestershire, Chichester in West Sussex and Windsor in Berkshire, taking the total in its chain to 30.

These follow recent openings in Wimbledon and Bath. There are also Giggling Squids in Berkhamsted in Herts and in Brentwood and Billericay in Essex.

The company has previously said it aims to open 70 sites by 2022
