B&M Retail has damped down speculation that it will soon be opening a store in Bishop's Stortford.

It had been suggested that the firm would be moving into the newly-vacated Poundland premises in South Street. The rumours were reinforced by an advertisement for a permanent B&M branch manager in the town.

It said:"B&M Retail are the UK's fastest-growing variety retailer. We offer customers a antastic range of products including food, FMCG [fast-moving consumer goods], homewares, DIY, furniture, garden and pet care at amazing prices.

"From only having 21 stores in 2005 to the 500+ stores we currently operator (sic) from, there is sure to be [a] store near you. We continue to have ambitious plans for growth - could you be our next area manager?"

However, this week a spokeswoman told the Independent:"We have no plans to open a new store in Bishop's Stortford, but we are open to investing in the region.

"Sometimes when we're looking to invest in an area we'll advertise job vacancies should we commit to a new store."
