Bishop's Stortford Running Club launches 2022 beginners' course: 10 weeks to 10k

Bishop's Stortford Running Club (BSRC) has opened registrations for its 2022 beginners' course – a 10 weeks to 10k programme led by its qualified coaches.

The first class at the club's Beldams Lane HQ is on Wednesday April 27. The sessions, which run until June 29, also include expert presentations on a wide range of running topics, access to the clubhouse bar and the option to order a meal to refuel after each run.

Former beginner Robinne Colby said: "Did you make a New Year's resolution to start running and have fallen along the wayside? Or perhaps you'd like to run but want to run with others or meet new people? Or maybe you used to run and need some encouragement to get back to it? Bishop's Stortford Running Club's beginners' course could be just what you're looking for."

The course begins on the club field at Beldams Lane and, as the nights get lighter and runs get longer, progresses to running trails. The aim is that by the end of the course, participants will be able to run steadily for up to an hour and comfortably complete a 5k parkrun.

Robinne said: "Many of last year's beginners continue to run together throughout the week and have gone on to enter events together including the Takeley 10k and Duxford Dash, and some have even gone on to run marathons.

"Club events such as the Norfolk Relay and cross-country inter-club races welcome ex-beginners and are an opportunity to test your running skills in different settings."

Niki Champion completed the challenge last year. She said: "The course is fantastically well organised, and whether you're a total beginner or have some running experience, the course is for you.

"You find yourself part of a club whose members are so welcoming, friendly, supportive and knowledgeable. I've made some special friends and the support I've received, especially from the ex-beginners, has blown me away."

Fellow graduate Simon Dewhurst said: "Completing the BSRC beginners' course was one of the best decisions I made in 2021.

"Although I had limited running experience, the course encouraged me to run a lot more than I'd been doing in a positive and structured environment. I can now run longer than I ever could before and hope to enter some races this year. Both the running and the social side keep me coming back for more."

Susan Tidman added: "I found the course to be a great mix of running and tutorials on running-related topics, such as running gear, stretches and nutrition.

"The course creates a great community feel which encourages you to keep running and stretching your personal goals, whether that be 5k, 10k, 15k or further."

Robinne said: "The first night of the beginners' course always sticks in my mind. As I huffed and puffed my way around the track, I couldn't believe I'd be running the Takeley 10k. Yet I did and, what's more, I loved it.

"I now know an amazing group of people who I still run with. Signing up to the beginners' course was one of the best decisions I've ever made."

The £75 cost includes club membership until March 2023. Beginners will be encouraged to step up to a 10k event as part of their ongoing participation. To book, see https://www.myclubhouse.co.uk/BSRC/ and register on the beginners 2022 link.
