Hertfordshire county councillor hails scheme after 20mph limits put brakes on Sawbridgeworth speedsters

A 20mph speed limit put in place in several roads in Sawbridgeworth is “largely being adhered to”, according to the town’s Hertfordshire county councillor.

The limits were brought in last year in central south east Sawbridgeworth by Cllr Eric Buckmaster – and the results of a review posted on the town’s Facebook group revealed positive results.

Surveys taken in March revealed average speeds were mainly on or under 20mph with only three roads registering marginally above the limit.

In Brook Road, westbound, mean speeds were 20.82mph, East Drive westbound 21.22mph and Elmwood eastbound 20.92mph.

Cllr Buckmaster stressed he had received reports of speeding drivers, but the average speeds demonstrated that the limits were being adhered to.

He added: “This is not just because of the signage. The layout of the roads and the number of parked cars all contribute to keeping average speeds low.

“This is true of much of Sawbridgeworth and I think the addition of the speed limit signs serves to create an environment where people should take more care, even if there are those who choose not to comply from time to time.”

Cllr Buckmaster said in May last year he also aimed to bring in 20mph limits in the north and west of the town with an aim to “make travel in Sawbridgeworth as safe as possible”.
