Tribute to Saint Nicholas School head David Bown after death crash
The head of St Nicholas School in Old Harlow has died after being hit by a car while walking in the Brecon Beacons in his native Wales with his teenage son.
David Bown, 50, who had been at the co-educational independent day school in Hobbs Cross Road for two years, had returned to Cardiff to watch Saturday’s Six Nations rugby union international between Wales and England.
Mr Bown was involved in a collision with a Hyundai Terracan at around 6.30pm on Friday (Feb 22) on a road near Pontsticill Reservoir. Despite the efforts of ambulance crews and Dyfed-Powys Police officers, he died at the scene.
A statement from Saint Nicholas School said: “Our whole school community has been deeply shocked and saddened at this tragic news.
"David was a dynamic and visionary headmaster and was immensely popular with the children, the parents and his colleagues. We are all working hard to support each other through this difficult time.”
A book of condolence has been opened at the school.
Mr Bown lived in Hatfield Heath with his wife and son, a Year 11 pupil at St Nicholas.
Welsh police are investigating the crash which closed the road for five hours.
