Motorist, 83, has bank card stolen at Bishop's Stortford car park ticket machine

An 83-year-old motorist had his bank card stolen while trying to pay to park in Bishop's Stortford.

Police said the distraction theft happened in Causeway car park on Tuesday last week (August 24) at around 1.15pm.

The victim had his wallet in one hand and his card in the other when he was approached at a ticket machine by a man in his 30s and about 5ft 10in tall.

PC Derek Lewin, of Bishop's Stortford's neighbourhood policing team, said: "He then heard a male behind him say that if he wasn't familiar with the machine 'Just do this' and appeared to be helping him to use it.

"The victim then reached for his card and realised it had gone. He'd put it in the machine and been distracted while his card was stolen."

PC Lewin said the victim realised straight away what had happened and returned to his car to cancel the card immediately by phone.
