Ambulance on blue-light call has windscreen shattered by object thrown from bridge over A120

An ambulance’s windscreen was shattered by an object thrown from a bridge over the A120 while it was responding to a 999 call.

Detectives are treating the incident on the dual carriageway east of Stansted Airport as a case of criminal damage to a vehicle endangering life and have today (Tuesday August 27) issued an appeal for the public’s help.

The East of England Ambulance Service NHS Trust (EEAST) vehicle was on a blue light response to an emergency call last Wednesday (August 21) at around 3.30pm when it was hit.

The driver reported that an unknown object was thrown from the B1256 bridge at the Dunmow West turn-off and struck the windscreen, causing it to shatter. The damage was estimated at £500.

Det Con Clair Ward, of Essex Police’s Braintree CID, said: “Throwing objects from a bridge is both reckless and dangerous, and we are treating this incident as criminal damage to a vehicle endangering life.

“Thankfully, the crew weren’t harmed, but the consequences could have been very serious. This is completely unacceptable and we would ask for the public’s help.”
