The process for 2020 admission to primary, junior and middle schools in Bishop’s Stortford and elsewhere in Hertfordshire opens today (Monday, November 4).

Parents or carers have a 10-week window until mid-January to apply online by ranking their four preferences and are urged to visit schools before settling on their short lists.

Jenny Coles, the county council’s director of children’s services, said: “Last year nearly 98% of children in Hertfordshire were allocated one of their four ranked primary, junior or middle schools.

“Despite our best efforts, we can’t always guarantee parental preference. I would urge parents/carers to carefully consider the schools they rank, to make realistic preferences and to visit local schools before applying.”

Copies of a leaflet explaining how to apply are being distributed to families. They are being posted directly to those with children of reception age and distributed by schools to children in Year 2 in infant schools and Year 4 in first schools.

The closing date for under-11s' applications to start school in September 2020 is Wednesday, January 15. It is vital that parents/carers make their applications on time.
