New book remembers Saffron Walden servicemen who died in Second World War
A new book pays tribute to 57 Saffron Walden men who died on active service during the Second World War.
Saffron Walden Remembers records details of the soldiers, sailors and airmen from the town who gave their lives between 1939 and 1945.
Author Malcolm White said: "Bob Pike had written an excellent book on the victims of World War One, The Victor Heroes. However, I was conscious, every Remembrance Day, that as the years go by and we all say 'We will remember them', very few people can actually remember any of the brave people from Saffron Walden killed during the Second World War.
"It was for this reason, and to show the difficulties, hardship, bravery and courage these people had to endure, that I decided to research and record these details in an effort to ensure that these service personnel are more than just names on a memorial.
"I hope the book also shows how Saffron Walden people were involved worldwide and in almost every major operation throughout the war."
The book costs £10 from Saffron Walden Tourist Information Centre. Malcolm will be signing copies there on Saturday (November 12) from 9.30am to 1pm.
He was a town council clerk from 1976 to 2010 and has written books and magazine articles about the history of Saffron Walden.
