Award for Princess Alexandra Hospital’s singing nurse Carina Pimenta who is in tune with patients

A nurse who boosted a patient’s spirits by singing to him is Princess Alexandra Hospital NHS Trust’s latest DAISY® Award winner.

Carina Pimenta is a tissue viability specialist from Harlow. Her nomination for the award – whereby patients, families and colleagues can honour a nurse or midwife – highlighted how she goes above and beyond.

One patient, a double amputee with limited upper body strength, was feeling very low. Carina sang to him to boost his spirits and made special arrangements for the family dog to visit the hospital. Most importantly, she helped him to believe in himself.

She is described as “someone who works miracles to help patients suffering with their mental health to turn those feelings around, to smile and trust in themselves”.

Sharon McNally, chief nurse, said: “Our DAISY® Awards recognise nurses and midwives that go above and beyond for our patients and there is no doubt from the nomination received that Carina does just that, always putting the patient at the heart of all she does.

“I was so pleased to personally surprise Carina with the DAISY® Award and to say a very heartfelt thank you on behalf of the trust for her continued efforts to support patients in her care and colleagues.”
