Imagine my delight when I heard that seven brilliant businesses from Bishop’s Stortford had made it to the regional finals of the prestigious Muddy Stilettos Herts & Beds Awards, four of which are right in the heart of our town centre!
Let’s hear it for Paisa (Best Bar), Roni’s (Best Restaurant), Maison De Scarlett (Best Women’s Style) and South Street Pantry (Best Café).
It’s a proud moment for our town, showcasing just how much talent, passion and dedication thrive in our high street.
Now, let’s put this into perspective. Herts & Beds covers some pretty big hitters, including Watford, St Albans, Hertford and Bedford. So making it to the finalist list? That’s no small feat! These businesses are officially among the best of the best.
But what is it that makes them stand out? Let’s take a closer look at the magic behind these much-loved local gems.
Paisa – Best Bar
A stone’s throw from my former cake-making business, I watched in awe as Lorenzo, one of the three Paisa owners, took a former menswear shop on the corner of North Street and transformed it into the stylish, welcoming bar we know today.
Back then, he was covered in dust and paint. Now he’s behind the bar they built mixing up stunning cocktails with charm and flair.
With his equally passionate business partners, Giuseppe and Valerio, they bring a touch of Sicilian and Neapolitan hospitality to Bishop’s Stortford and the town is all the better for it!
Maison De Scarlett – Best Women’s Style
Tucked away in Florence Walk, Maison De Scarlett is a breath of fresh air on the high street. This unisex boutique, run by the fabulous Andreea, is a haven for those who love stylish, handpicked designer fashion.
It’s a rare gem in a world of online shopping, reminding us all of the joy of discovering that perfect outfit in a beautifully curated space.
Personal service, stunning collections and a shopping experience to cherish - what’s not to love?
Roni’s – Best Restaurant
If you’re looking for a quick bite, Roni’s probably isn’t the place because this is where you come to savour every moment.
From the crisp linen napkins to the extensive wine and cocktail list, Roni’s is all about indulgence.
The Mediterranean-inspired menu is freshly cooked to order and the atmosphere is always buzzing.
The management team’s commitment to excellence is clear and every visit feels like a special occasion.
South Street Pantry – Best Café
Down at the other end of the high street, South Street Pantry is a much-loved institution. Since taking over three years ago, Oliver Colman has not only maintained but elevated this charming café.
With an impressive selection of cakes - seriously, it’s a tough choice! - and a menu catering to all tastes and dietary needs, South Street Pantry is a popular spot for a relaxed bite in a warm, welcoming atmosphere.
The friendly team keeps the place feeling like home, with plenty of laughter and community spirit.
What is it that ties all these businesses together? Passionate, local people who not only live here but also invest their time, energy and heart into the community. They employ local people and play a vital role in making Bishop’s Stortford a fantastic place to live, work and visit.
In an age where many of us long for a high street full of personality and community spirit, these businesses prove that independent shops and eateries are still thriving.
And they’re not alone. I know there are many more incredible businesses on our high street, but their stories are for another day!
Now, here’s where you come in. If you love these businesses as much as I do, let’s give them the recognition they deserve. Head over to @MuddyStilettos and cast your vote. Let’s show everyone what makes Bishop’s Stortford such a special place. See www.herts.muddystilettos.co.uk/awards/categories.
The deadline is 1pm on Tuesday April 15. Regional winners will be announced on Wednesday April 30. Happy voting!
