Barclays Local to open at South Mill Arts after closure of North Street branch in Bishop’s Stortford

A new Barclays Local facility is to open in Bishop’s Stortford a week after the banking giant closes its branch in North Street.

Its “in-person banking support” will be available at South Mill Arts in South Road from Thursday April 18.

Staff will be on-site from Monday to Friday, 9.30am to 12.30pm and 1pm to 4pm, to provide a walk-in service and pre-booked appointments.

According to Barclays, its Local service offers “face-to-face assistance, helping customers with their everyday finances and money management needs”.

However, customers cannot deposit cash and cheques and must use their nearest post office instead or pay in cheques using the BarclaysApp, with Local staff ready to show them how.

The cashless facility also hosts free digital skills workshops and fraud and scam awareness events for the community.

The North Street branch will close on Friday April 12, after closure plans were confirmed on January 12.

Although Barclays’ decision was condemned by some customers and commentators, the bank maintained that 94% of people who used the branch in 2022 had also banked with them by phone, online and via the app.
