Sawbridgeworth got into the jubilee spirit for four days of royal revelry, kicked off by the lighting of a beacon at Sayesbury Manor on Thursday evening (June 2).

Town mayor Cllr Greg Rattey was joined by the band of the 309 (Sawbridgeworth) squadron of Air Training Corps (ATC) air cadets as the beacon was lit, sparking celebrations. After the lighting, a reception with invited guests was held at the council chamber.

Houses were festooned with Union Jack bunting and residents held street parties to mark the 70th year of Queen Elizabeth II's reign.

Music was much in abundance. Performers entertained regulars in the town's pubs and there was some poignant sounds of days gone by on offer at Sawbridgeworth Memorial Hall.

Three-woman act The Decibelles entertained an audience of 70 with a cappella versions of hit songs from the 1940s and 1950s. The evening raised funds for armed forces charity SSAFA.

Coronation chicken was available on the night and Sawbridgeworth Local History Society (SLHS) produced a 'then and now' display of photos and memorabilia, plus their publications and town walk leaflets. SLHS member Dave Mead’s mother’s original 1953 bunting was on display across the front of the stage.

Residents got together to hold street parties on Sunday, with Bullfields, Buttersweet Rise, Southbrook Road and Cherry Gardens among them.

Jess Jeffrey reported the Buttersweet Rise shindig was "fab", adding: "There was such a great atmosphere and everyone was truly in the spirit of the day. My mum, Joanne, and residents Roo, Tracey and Mandy all arranged it.

"We were lucky enough to have the best of the weather and such a great day with neighbours who are now more like friends."

Sawbridgeworth town councillor Angus Parsad-Wyatt helped to organise the Bullfields party and thanked Dorrington's bakery for donating cupcakes for afternoon tea boxes for housebound neighbours.
