Birchwood High School bilingual students celebrate their homelands

Bilingual students at Birchwood High School in Bishop’s Stortford showcased their home countries for fellow pupils.

The Parsonage Lane secondary hosted its annual European Day of Languages Fayre last week.

The event allowed the school’s EAL (English as an additional language) students to celebrate their native tongues and cultures.

They included youngsters from France, Germany, Spain, Portugal, Poland, Bulgaria and Romania. There were also representatives of Turkey, Brazil, Hong Kong and Iran.

A Birchwood spokeswoman said: “Students visiting the fayre could try new and delicious foods, earning a flag sticker by learning a little bit of the different languages and asking great questions.

“This was a fantastic, culturally rich event with a real buzz to it. Thank you to our EAL students and parents, plus our Year 11 and staff volunteers for so many of the incredible dishes and such an incredible event.”
