Burglars target Bishop’s Stortford Recycling Centre days after it reopened following major refurbishment

Burglars targeted Bishop’s Stortford Recycling Centre days after it reopened following a major refurbishment to increase capacity.

The waste tip on Woodside industrial estate, off Dunmow Road, closed on October 27 last year, with reopening planned for around eight weeks later, just before Christmas.

The refurb consisted of doubling the number of parking spaces and bringing in more recycling containers.

But Hertfordshire County Council said the planned relaunch date had to be delayed due to “freezing cold, very wet and stormy weather” and it did not reopen until Sunday February 2.

Herts police told the Indie that burglars forced entry to the site last week between 4pm Monday (Feb 3) and 7am Thursday (Feb 6) and took one of the metal containers.

The centre is open 8am to 4pm on Mondays, Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, and closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

A police spokesperson said enquiries were under way. Anyone with information is asked to call them on 101 or report it online at www.herts.police.uk/report, quoting crime reference 41/11878/25.
