Alexander Curtis: Broxbourne Tories expel former chairman of Hertford and Stortford Conservatives
A former chairman of Hertford and Stortford Conservatives has been expelled from the Tory group on Broxbourne Borough Council.
Cllr Alexander Curtis is also the Hertfordshire County Council member for Hoddesdon North. He is a former East Herts district councillor for Great Amwell and a mayor of Ware.
Cllr Curtis, who represents Hoddesdon Town and Rye Park ward on the borough council, now sits as an unaligned councillor according to the council’s website, but he says he remains a Conservative councillor.
Cllr Corina Gander, who took over as leader of the Conservative-run council in May, said: “The Conservative group on Broxbourne Council is committed to the very highest standards of conduct and behaviour.
“Following concerns raised about Cllr Curtis, the group met and voted to expel him from the group.”
However, Cllr Curtis said that he was “unaware of any issues regarding my conduct and behaviour, which have always been of a high standard”.
He continued: “As for the claim about a borough council group vote, recollections may vary.
“It is no secret that there are some differences of opinion between Cllr Gander and I, but we both continue to serve the people of Broxbourne as Conservative councillors.”
Cllr Curtis was first elected to Broxbourne Borough Council in 2023, winning more than 50% of the vote in his ward.
He was the council’s cabinet member for finance until Cllr Gander became leader, and was responsible for setting its budget for the current 2025-26 financial year.
Cllr Curtis became a county councillor earlier this year, fighting off a Reform UK challenge to win Hoddesdon North, the seat formerly held by Broxbourne’s Conservative MP, Lewis Cocking.
Cllr Curtis continues to sit in the Conservative group at County Hall and remains deputy chairman of Hertfordshire Conservatives.
He was chair of Hertford and Stortford Conservatives from 2017 to 2020 – a period when the association selected Julie Marson to succeed Mark Prisk as their General Election candidate in December 2019.
