Hadham Road in Bishop’s Stortford closed after burst main leaves homes without water

A burst main saw homes in Bishop’s Stortford without water over the weekend and a major route into the town closed.

The A1250 Hadham Road was closed early on Sunday (Sept 15) between its junctions with Bells Hill and Maze Green Road after the burst pipe sent a torrent of muddy water as far down as Indian restaurant Zara, on the corner with Chantry Road.

Affinity Water sent a message to homes, apologising to those without water or with low pressure, and advised residents to avoid using dishwashers or washing machines until the main had been repaired.

A spokesperson for highways authority Hertfordshire County Council told the Indie on Monday (Sept 16): “Affinity Water are carrying out works to repair a burst water main on Hadham Road, between Bells Hill and Maze Green Road, and they have had to close the road while they do this.

“We are working with Affinity to get the road open as quickly as possible and we are hopeful that it might be possible to reopen the road under temporary traffic lights while works continue.

“However, this will depend on how much damage has been caused underneath the road.”

When the Indie visited the site on Monday afternoon the road was still closed, and although a worker told us the leak had been fixed the road might not be reopened until Wednesday (Sept 18).

A muddy residue of the escaped water can still be seen along Hadham Road down to Zara.

The Indie has contacted Affinity Water for a comment.
