Car engulfed by flames and two others damaged in fire in Tesco car park in Bishop’s Stortford

Stunned shoppers watched as flames engulfed one car and licked around two others parked next to it in a Bishop’s Stortford supermarket car park.

Firefighters from Bishop’s Stortford attended the blaze at Tesco at Bishop’s Park on Friday at around 3pm after reports that the diesel Nissan Qashqai had caught alight as the female driver started the engine.

She managed to escape unhurt, despite the car being ablaze within minutes and the flames threatening cars parked next to it.

A spokesman for Bishop’s Stortford firefighters said the blaze was put out quickly with a hose reel, but the Nissan was badly burnt and the adjacent cars damaged.

The cause is believed to be an electrical fault.
