‘Happy and tuneful’ Carols on Fair Green in Sawbridgeworth raises more than £2,500 for charities

A “happy and tuneful” half hour of carol singing was enjoyed by all who gathered in Sawbridgeworth on Christmas Eve.

Fair Green was packed for the traditional Rotary Club organised event as those gathered welcomed Great St Mary’s Church Choir and members of Epping Forest Band, to lead the carol singing under the capable baton of choir member Mark Lee.

The carols included children singing Away in a Manger, the audience taking different parts in We Three Kings and Good King Wenceslas, and people gently waving mobile phones in the air in time with the music during Silent Night.

As the event drew to an end Great St Mary’s lay minister Di Kitson asked for God’s Blessing. Rotary President Jim Barrie thanked Mark Lee for stepping up as ‘music maestro’ for the first time, and he thanked everyone who helped with the event and everyone who came and sang.

The event raised a record £1,085 for Herts Vison Loss, plus £1,085 for the Hertfordshire Hearing Advisory Service, and £543 for other charities through the Sawbridgeworth & District Rotary Trust Fund.

One happy participant commented that it was “something that makes Sawbridgeworth special at christmas”.
