Sawbridgeworth clean-up volunteers quack off the mark to clear 'polluted' pond
Volunteers didn't duck the issue when an Indie letter writer highlighted a badly littered pond in Spellbrook.
Carolyn Devonshire, of Allens Green revealed how the pond at the junction of Parsonage Lane and Spellbrook Lane West used to be frequented by ducks, but was polluted and full of car tyres, beer cans and black bin liners.
She said: "It looks disgusting and is threatening our wildlife."
That sparked volunteers from Tidy Up Sawbridgeworth (TUS) into action – with help from Carolyn and
last week they cleared all but a couple of pieces of rubbish they couldn't reach.
Corinne Lewis, from TUS, who reported the clear-up, said: "We are really hopeful that ducks may be swimming there again soon.
"In fact, one of the volunteers, Peter, takes frog spawn there when he has any left over from his pond. Fingers crossed there will be plenty of frogs there too."
