Comment: Christmas cancellation followed by a fayre amount of collaboration

Charities are quids in this week after community spirit spread across Bishop’s Stortford, ensuring the success of a series of festive events.

Disappointment over the cancellation of the town council’s annual Christmas Fayre, thanks to the threat of Storm Darragh wreaking havoc on the high street, was transformed by collaboration and a can-do attitude.

The team at Jackson Square and others stepped in to help beat the weather. However, the festive entente is just the tip of an iceberg of goodwill.

As we do in almost every edition, this week’s Indie makes no apology for highlighting just a few of the good causes which beaver away in the background throughout the year.

They are the glue that sticks our society together, so if you have a few pounds to spare, consider supporting Grove Cottage, Bishop’s Stortford Food Bank, St Clare Hospice or another worthy recipient. Now, more than ever, they need your support.

And while you’re in the mood to recognise our community champions and unsung heroes, why not go one step further and reinforce your donation with a nomination in our Indies Community Awards.

Each year, thanks to our 15 generous sponsors, we celebrate the individuals, groups and businesses going above and beyond to make Bishop’s Stortford, Sawbridgeworth and Stansted better places.

Help us honour their contribution in January and beyond. You can nominate here.

Remember – community spirit is for life, not just for Christmas!
