East Herts residents warned to beware of council tax scams

East Herts Council is warning residents of Bishop's Stortford, Sawbridgeworth and the rest of the district to beware of council tax fraudsters.

It has had reports of several scams offering refunds, a support scheme, payment reductions or urgent payment needing to be made via a different website – and even one relating to a Covid-19 council tax reduction.

The authority said: "Please be aware these are all scams/frauds. If in doubt, please check the council website or contact us first.

"We would remind our customers for the continuing need to be cautious when receiving unsolicited calls, emails and correspondence, especially when customer finances are under pressure, as you may be more vulnerable to these scams which are promising reductions, but could become a victim of crime."
