A suspected drunken driver ploughed into five cars at the BMW dealership in Bishop’s Stortford.

The vehicles were parked on the forecourt of Barons Stansted BMW in Stansted Road when the incident happened late on Sunday evening.

The offending motorist’s Toyota Avensis ended up on its roof and the contents of at least one tin of paint in his car were splattered over the shiny BMW models.

Police were called at 10.22pm on Sunday. By the time officers arrived, the driver had fled the scene, but a female passenger was still in the overturned Toyota.

She was injured in the smash and was taken to Princess Alexandra Hospital in Harlow for treatment.

Officers examining the scene discovered skidmarks on both sides of Stansted Road. It appeared as though the motorist had lost control of the Toyota Avensis after it hit a kerb.

Police set out to search for the culprit and found him half an hour later near Grange Paddocks Leisure Centre, off Rye Street, where he was breathalysed.

He was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving, of being drunk and in charge of a vehicle and of failing to stop after a road traffic collision.

The driver has been released under investigation while further police enquiries are carried out.
