‘Try before you buy’ bike loan scheme encourages Uttlesford people to cycle to reduce air pollution
A ‘try before you buy’ bike hire scheme has been wheeled out across Uttlesford to encourage people to cycle more.
The scheme, where anyone can hire a pedal bike, e-bike or e-cargo bike for up to six months, was trialled by Uttlesford District Council in Saffron Walden.
It joins two other bike hire schemes already operating in the town as part of a clean air project to raise awareness of pollution and enable more sustainable ways to travel.
A council spokesperson said: “The council is delighted to be able to roll out the scheme across the district.
“Anyone who lives or works in Uttlesford can hire a bike from one month to six months. They can pay monthly by subscription, with no deposit, and stop at any time. The bike will be delivered to their home or work address.
“This is ideal for anyone who would like to try out a bike or e-bike before buying.”
Wicken Bonhunt resident Claire has been trialling an e-bike for the past few months and has grown to love cycling.
“My e-bike is a practical alternative to a car. I do regular short trips on it every day, sometimes several times a day,” she said.
“I was a reluctant cyclist, but now I love it. I’m a convert and will look at pricing and what to buy, but for now I like the hire scheme and the ‘try before you buy’ ethic.”
