A pub near Bishop's Stortford is offering free drinks to dog owners who bring their four-legged friends into the bar with them on bank holiday Monday (August 26) – which coincides with National Dog Day.

The Three Horseshoes in Spellbrook, part of the Chef & Brewer chain of country inns, announced the giveaway after a survey found that 55% of dog owners would prefer to take their pooch to the pub instead of their partner, friend or family member.

The Chef & Brewer research also found that 77% of owners would rather spend time with their dog than their spouse and 85% said their canine companion was their best friend.

The Three Horseshoes is offering dog owners a complimentary glass of their favourite tipple – all they have to do is take their dog to the bar with them when they order. As well as a free drink for the owner, there will be treats for the dogs too.

General manager Alex Rowbottom said: “We’re a nation of dog-lovers and our research just goes to show that our four-legged friends really do make the perfect pub companions, especially after a long walk in the countryside."

A range of drinks – wines, cask ales, craft beers, spirits and soft drinks – is included in the offer. Redemption is limited to one drink per person. Full terms and conditions can be found online.
