A Hatfield Health couple celebrated their diamond wedding with a replica of their original cake – made by Dorrington's 60 years after it made the first one.

The Sawbridgeworth-based bakery was asked by John and Brenda Garrett's family to recreate the two-tier white cake and John said they were delighted with the result, which was on display at a pre-lockdown party at Bishop's Stortford Golf Club attended by around 60 family members and friends.

"We had a lovely party with all of our relatives – our children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great, great-grandchildren!" said John.

"The cake was a replica of the one we had at our wedding. We took a photo of it to Dorrington's and they made it again. They made the original one as Brenda was working at Dorrington's when we were courting. It looked just like the original!"

The couple married in March 1960, having met at the former Anchor pub in South Street while John was home on leave from National Service with the Royal Navy.

"We just clicked and married on March 12, the day after my 21st birthday," said John, now 81. Brenda, 80, is four months younger.

The couple formerly lived in Bishop's Stortford, where they raised their three sons and a daughter – John, Dean, Anthony and Sally – and now live in sheltered accommodation in Hatfield Heath.

They have their huge family of 29 grandchildren to entertain them. "We can't keep count!" joked John, who used to be a telephone engineer and worked for Wiltshire Farm Foods. Brenda worked in the kitchen at All Saints C of E Primary School in Parsonage Lane and at the former Whitehall Hotel in Lindsey Road, off Rye Street.

And their secret to 60 happy years together? "We share everything," said John. "Every day we take it in turns to make dinner for each other."
