Police are trying to trace the driver of an SUV that overturned after crashing in Bishop’s Stortford town centre in the early hours of Friday.
A Volkswagen Tiguan ploughed into traffic lights, a pedestrian crossing barrier and two planters in the central reservation of The Causeway.
The driver fled the scene, leaving behind a female passenger who was seen to by paramedics.
A Hertfordshire Constabulary spokeswoman told the Indie: “Police were called shortly after 4.10am today following a road traffic collision in The Causeway, Bishop’s Stortford.
“It was reported that a VW Tiguan had collided with roadside furniture and overturned, near the register office.
“The driver was not at the scene on police arrival.
“A female passenger was assessed by the ambulance service but did not require hospital treatment. The vehicle was recovered and enquiries are ongoing to trace the driver.”
A spokesman for highways authority Hertfordshire County Council said: “Our highways team were dispatched to the area at 4.45am and temporarily cleared the site and made everything safe.
“They returned at around 11am and closed the road to fully clear the debris and the damaged planters, sweep the road and repair the traffic lights. The repair work to the lights took until the early evening.”
Nicky Fraser posted on the Indie’s Facebook page: “Right outside my block [of flats] last night. I heard the skidding then crash. The car was proper damaged. They had to clean up the road. Never mind the car, he can get a new one. Just hope everyone was ok.”
