Bishop's Stortford motorists face squeeze on spaces as car park closes

Drivers in Bishop's Stortford will face a shortfall of 143 spaces when the Northgate End car park closes on Monday April 20.

Car parks operator East Herts Council is shutting the site favoured by town centre workers to make way for a six-floor, 597-space multi-storey which will include charging points for electric vehicles.

Its construction is key to transformation of the Causeway into a cultural quarter called Old River Lane which will feature an arts centre incorporating a new theatre, a public square and mixed development of around 150 homes, shops and commercial spaces.

The council says the 47 bays it created on land next to the Charringtons building after demolition of the '1 The Causeway' office block in 2017 addresses some of the shortfall, but drivers will be competing for 143 fewer spaces on the current total of 1,737 at ten sites.

EHC says it is also making available about 40 on-street spaces in the Chantry area. The cost of a permit varies from £400 to £600 a year, depending on location of the bay and how close it is to the town centre.

Council leader Cllr Linda Haysey said: "We understand that Northgate End is an important car park for people who need to drive into Bishop's Stortford, but this new multi-storey car park is essential in supporting the local economy and the ambitions of the town.

"Although we encourage walking, cycling and public transport for residents and visitors travelling into Bishop's Stortford, where drivers do need to use their cars we hope that the range of alternative options will help them to find other methods of visiting the town and using Northgate End."

The council points out that parking is available at the railway station and services like the 'hail and ride' Stortford Shuttle and regular bus routes offer alternative ways of reaching the town centre.
