A woman walking her dog near Broxted came across an unusual sight – a 6ft albino python slithering across a country lane.

The shock find was made last Thursday (June 11) by a neighbour of Cherry Green resident Steve Jones, who sent the photo to the Stortford Indie.

"My neighbour out walking her dog came across this python this afternoon," he said. "It slithered across the road into the field.

"The road is about 12ft (3.66m) across so this snake was about 6ft (1.83m) long. Police and RSPCA were called but only logged the call and were not willing to do anything."

The Indie's Nature Notes columnist, Jono Forgham, identified it as an escaped albino Burmese python.

"They get large, but not quite to the 35ft python I encountered in a Sri Lankan rainforest when mothing one night!" he said. "It's unlikely to survive the winter unless retrapped."
