The Hertfordshire County Council (HCC) election on Thursday May 1 will be a five-horse race between the major parties – Conservatives, Greens, Labour, Liberal Democrats and Reform UK.
All 78 seats, or divisions, on the authority are up for grabs. Of the current county councillors, 50 – almost two-thirds – are seeking re-election, not all in their present locations.
In all, 424 candidates are standing. Four of the five main parties are represented in every division, while the Greens are fielding contenders in all but Hatfield South. There are also 19 candidates from the Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition (TUSC), five Independents, three each from the Christian Peoples Alliance (CPA) and from the Heritage Party and one each from UKIP (United Kingdom Independence Party), British Democrats, Transform, the Alliance for Democracy and Freedom, and the Communist Party.

In 2021, the Conservatives won an overall majority on HCC. The Tories’ current 42 seats – four fewer than they won on polling day four years ago – give them a majority of six. The Lib Dems have 22 seats, Labour six, Independents five and the Green Party and Reform UK one each. There is one vacant seat.
Hertfordshire is one of only 14 county councils holding elections this year, as many local counts – including Essex’s – have been delayed to 2026 as a result of the Government’s planned changes to local government.
The outcome of this year’s ballot could be a signal of voters’ direction of travel following Labour’s victory at the General Election last July. The last 12 months have seen the rise of Nigel Farage’s Reform UK as a political heavyweight, and observers will be keen to check on the party’s progress on May 1.
