Sawbridgeworth's Nostalgia Day gives guests a chance to remember - and enjoy entertainment from Diverse Performing Arts

Guests at Sawbridgeworth's annual Nostalgia Day were treated to an evocative event last Saturday - the day before Remembrance Sunday - which began with a wreath-laying at the Shingle Hall Airfield Memorial.

Around 25 members of the public were joined by representatives of Hertfordshire Airfield Memorial Group, No 2 Squadron RAF Marham, Hertfordshire County Council, Sawbridgeworth Local History Society and the town's deputy mayor Cllr Ruth Buckmaster.

Tim Bray performed the Last Post and wreaths were laid before Ian Nelson from No 2 Squadron presented a thank you plaque to Dave Mead from the memorial group.

After guests returned to Sawbridgeworth Memorial Hall, a short ceremony conducted by Father Simon Vivian from Great St Mary's Church was held and a wreath was laid by Frank Lee, a member of the Arctic Convoy in the Second World War.

Diverse Performing Arts then gave an entertaining tribute to the past 50 years, singing and dancing to popular numbers including Johnny B. Goode, Yellow Submarine, Baggy Trousers and bringing the audience up to date with the UK's 2022 Eurovision song Space Man.

Event co-organiser Hazel Mead said that some of the performers have appeared in this event since it started in 2012 and will now be going to university, so "we thank them for their commitment and wish them well in their studies".

Hazel added that the town's very own Elvis impersonator was unfortunately unable to appear due to him having Covid-19.

Guests could also enjoy a pictorial display by Sawbridgeworth Local History Society and peruse books for sale. Local bakers Dorringtons provided rock buns to the recipe they used to supply troops at the airfield in the Second World War.

Poppy face painting by Stephanie was as popular as ever and pre-school group Saplings had decorated a large poppy with their hand prints.

Proceeds of £543.23 were donated to the Royal British Legion.
