Coronavirus helpline launched by Sawbridgeworth churches 'reassuring people'

Elderly and vulnerable people are “reassured” by a helpline launched by churches in the town during the coronavirus lockdown.

A partnership was formed between Great St Mary’s, Sawbridgeworth Evangelical Congregational Church, Most Holy Redeemer Catholic Church and The Parochial Church Council of High Wych to help with deliveries of essentials for people who are self-isolating.

Shona Passfield, churchwarden at Great St Mary’s, said the helpline had been extended to include Spellbrook, High Wych, Eastwick, Gilston and Allens Green and there was now a freephone number.

“We have had a vast number of things that people have asked for,” said Shona. “It’s literally been posting a letter or having a washing machine repaired.”

She said people were bearing up but were concerned. “People are being very stoic, but it’s evident that some people are worried. They are reassured though that there is someone – in particular local – there to help and support them.”

The helpline is 0800 689 1724 and people can ring for collection of shopping, prescriptions or for prayer and just a chat.

Shona said their authorised volunteers will always use a password agreed with people when they contact them and delivery volunteers hold a valid DBS check.
