Fan-tache-tic Flora! The 23-year-old Stortford woman who's been doing Movember
A 23-year-old Bishop's Stortford woman has been drawing a different moustache on her face each day throughout November to raise awareness of the alarmingly high suicide rate among men.
Flora Hewlett, who attended both Herts and Essex High School and The Bishop’s Stortford High School, has been fundraising for the Movember Foundation, a charity that addresses some of the biggest health issues faced by men: prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health and suicide prevention.
“I’m doing it as a conversation starter,” said Flora. “In bars and restaurants, just having a five-minute conversation with someone about men’s mental health wouldn’t have happened if I didn’t have a moustache drawn on my face.”
On her online donation page, Flora says: “Globally, the rate of suicide is alarmingly high, particularly in men. Too many men are ‘toughing it out’, keeping their feelings to themselves and struggling in silence.
“The Movember Foundation is aiming to reduce the rate of male suicide by 25% by 2030, and I want to help them get there. Help me stop men dying too young.”
Suicide is the single biggest killer of men under 45 in the UK. In 2015, 75% of all UK suicides were male, and Flora said that some of her own male friends have struggled with mental health. “That kind of gave me the little push I needed,” she said.
Flora has been sporting a different moustache each morning before commuting into London from her home on the Parsonage estate.
She works for Lemonaid, a company that sells soft drinks made from organic, Fairtrade-certified ingredients. With each bottle sold, the company makes a donation to charity.
Flora has been documenting her facial hair artwork on her Instagram page and has had a great reaction from followers. Each picture has received more than 100 likes, and so far she has raised £365 for the Movember Foundation.
“Because it looks so funny, it does get a good reaction,” she said. “If it helps one person then it’s all worth it in my eyes.”
