Farnham Church of England Primary School pupils turn to nature for their Nativity

Pupils at Farnham Church of England Primary School created a Christmas Nativity scene from woodland finds.

The students’ festive project was part of their forest school sessions and involved the aptly named Horse Chestnut, Silver Birch and Willow classes in Years 5 and 6.

Teacher Sara Haughey explained how the youngsters used their religious education lessons and outdoor learning to build a miniature stable in the woods from fallen branches and sticks.

They used natural materials to represent the infant Jesus, Mary and Joseph as well as a camel, lamb, a shepherd and wise men.

Once complete, the children sang Away in a Manger to complete the Nativity scene.

Ms Haughey said: “The children absolutely love forest school, and with an emphasis on outdoor learning, we’re so lucky we can take our lessons outside, giving the children a healthy, interactive and hands-on approach to learning.

“The result of their representation of the Christmas Story has been rewarding for them all and it was a delightful afternoon putting it all together and seeing the children so proud of their creation.”
