Flooding brings major disruption to trains between Liverpool Street and Stansted Airport through Bishop’s Stortford
Flooding as a result of heavy overnight rain brought major disruption to trains running through Bishop’s Stortford on Sunday (February 18).
Signalling problems in a tunnel outside Stansted Airport caused by flooding meant Stansted Express services between London Liverpool Street and the airport were “severely disrupted” for much of the day.
Train operator Greater Anglia announced soon after 4.30pm that services to and from the airport station were returning to normal, though some services may still be cancelled, delayed by up to 15 minutes or revised. Disruption was expected until 6.30pm.
The railway was also flooded at Audley End, blocking lines, but after Network Rail staff had resolved the problem, GA reported at 11.55am that all lines were now open, although disruption was expected until 1pm.
Earlier, trains at 15 and 45 minutes past each hour from Liverpool Street to Stansted Airport were terminating at Bishop’s Stortford while those leaving the airport for the capital on the hour and half-hour started from Stortford. A limited bus/coach service was in operation between Stortford and the airport.
Trains at 10 and 40 minutes past each hour to the airport from Liverpool Street were running through to the hub and stopping additionally at Stansted Mountfitchet, while those at 15 and 45 minutes past each hour in the other direction also stopped at the village station.
Services at 03 minutes past each hour from Norwich to Stansted Airport were diverted and terminated at Bishop’s Stortford while trains from the airport to Norwich at 09 minutes past each hour started at Bishop’s Stortford.
