The Indie’s former reporter for Sawbridgeworth has been chosen as the Liberal Democrat candidate in the May 6 town council by-election.

Emma Vandore, 45, has a daughter Grace, 5, with partner Paul Kanabahita and stepsons Daniel, 20, and David, 15. She helped the Indie launch its coverage of Sawbridgeworth in April 2019.

She said: “As well as deepening my knowledge and affection for our lovely town, I want to help our town council address the realities of life for young local working families. This motivated me to stand.”

In non-Covid times, Emma encourages budding authors to cultivate their talents through her group The Writers' Club, which meets monthly at Twisted Cellar in Stortford. It started at the much-missed Sawbridge Words bookstore but found a new home when the Bell Street shop closed.

The by-election follows Cllr Spencer Richards' decision last summer to stand down.

Emma said: “One pressing concern is the traffic pressures likely to be caused by the new developments, particularly at drop off and pick up. Working with my Liberal Democrat colleagues – including your county candidate Joe Dumont – I promise to work tirelessly to ensure this does not become unsustainable," she said.
