Chef Sanjay Kumar's healthy eating message for Bishop's Stortford care home residents

Top chef Sanjay Kumar dropped in at a Bishop's Stortford care home for the elderly to help promote healthy eating.

Working alongside resident chef Biju Sasidharan at Conewood Manor in Dunmow Road, Sanjay looked at their strengths and areas for improvement and held discussions with pensioners about the benefits of making little changes to eat better.

"The challenge of cooking in a care home is having to work with residents that are quite particular with their likes and dislikes, so it's hard to be adventurous with the cooking," said a spokeswoman for the home.

"Sanjay performed a live food demonstration with the residents, who were captivated by the live cooking in front of them. They all enjoyed eating the fresh food which was cooked with their participation."

Sanjay, whose career has taken him from the king of Saudi Arabia's personal chef to working for Raymond Blanc, works as a community chef in Hertfordshire. He was impressed that Conewood's chef was so "creative, passionate and well-organised" and had plans to use its allotment and to start cookery classes.

The two hope to partner up to prepare Boxing Day lunch for residents and their families.
