University Challenge: Former Hockerill Anglo-European College student and All Saints Primary School pupil in winning Queen Mary London team
A former Hockerill Anglo-European College student was part of the winning team in this week’s round of University Challenge.
On Monday night (August 9), Marcus Deal, 23, who also attended All Saints Primary School in Bishop's Stortford, appeared on the BBC Two competition presented by question master Jeremy Paxman.
He was representing Queen Mary College, University of London – where he is studying medicine – against Oxford Brookes.
The quiz was frustrating for viewers as the teams failed to answer three of the first five starter questions correctly. An exasperated Paxman was incredulous that the students could not identify common embroidery stitches.
In the end, Marcus and his three team-mates – captain Alex McGill, who is studying for a PhD in mathematics, fellow medical student Cathy Dominic and Ab Uthayakumar, who is studying economics – won 115-90 to progress to the next round.
Sebastian Priest, another medical student from Marcus’ class at Hockerill, will captain Bath when the university takes part in the quiz later on.
