Four horses die in stable fire near Hatfield Forest

Four horses have been killed in a fire at stables near Hatfield Forest.

The blaze happened at Gartons at Wood Row, Hatfield Broad Oak, on Sunday morning (May 31) at 11.15pm.

Essex County Fire and Rescue Service crews from Harlow, Old Harlow and Leaden Roding who attended the fire were unable to save the horses.

Mark Nevill, watch manager at Leaden Roding station, said: "When we arrived, a row of stables and surrounding hedgerow were completely alight.

"Water supplies were difficult, so it was necessary to set up a water shuttle to help us fight the fire.

"Our firefighters worked extremely hard in difficult conditions to bring the fire under control and extinguish it. Sadly, four horses died at the scene."

The firefighters had put out the fire by 1.55pm. An investigation into the cause was taking place this afternoon.
