Foodies are spoilt for choice when it comes to the chance of dining out in one of the top 10% of restaurants in the world – in the Indie area there are four.

The Tripadvisor 2021 Travellers' Choice Awards were revealed last week and on the list of restaurants are Bishop's Stortford pair Atkins in Water Lane and Shadhona in South Street, Brohmon in Chapel Hill, Stansted, and Chandini in High Wych.

The awards celebrate restaurants around the globe that consistently deliver fantastic experiences and reflect "the best of the best" for service, quality and customer satisfaction. Recipients can boast of being among the top 10% of restaurants in the world.

Our winners were particularly delighted, given the difficult period they have experienced with the coronavirus pandemic lockdowns.

Shadhona manager Koyes Miah, aka Smithy, said that in the 20 years since opening, the family-run restaurant had built a strong relationship with the people of Stortford.

"We try to create a friendly and welcoming atmosphere at all times so customers are eager to come back," he said. "Customers love the fact we're a family-run restaurant."

Shadhona was featured in the Indie in April 2020 after it delivered 100 free meals to NHS workers at Princess Alexandra Hospital, Harlow.

Chandini is a second-time winner and owner Abu Mohid, who also took the title of Covid Curry Hero 2020, was delighted with the award given the restaurant faced pandemic restrictions throughout the year.

He and his team responded to the coronavirus crisis by delivering food to vulnerable people and offering discounts to NHS workers.

A "thrilled" Karim Ullah, from Brohmon, said: "We have not even been able to open the restaurant for dining in for much more than six months, but we just kept working away to provide something exceptional to anyone who visits us."

In a Facebook post, Atkins said they were "honoured" to receive the award, adding: "In this particularly challenging year, we stood out by providing great service and experiences to our guests."
