Two Grove Cottage fundraisers need sponsorship from Bishop's Stortford businesses as they test their mettle on a motoring challenge across Europe.

This summer Allison Smith and Nicola Rooke are taking part in the Two Ball Beach Banger Rally, taking them almost 1,300 miles through three countries over four days in a clapped-out car.

They decided to set off on the adventure, which will test their teamwork, driving and navigational skills, in a banger that cost under £570!

The road trip starts in Saint Quentin in the north of France on July 22. They will continue through France, into Italy and on to Spain, finishing in Barcelona on July 25, following a route that includes the French Alps and the Pyrenees.

Allison, 48, has worked in Grove Cottage's special needs nursery in London Road for more than four years, caring for children under five.

She said: "I have seen first-hand how our special needs nursery has provided so many opportunities, not just for the children attending Grove Cottage, but also the familes. It has had such a positive impact and literally changed the lives of some families."

Grove Cottage, the home of Bishops Stortford Mencap, also supports older children and adults of all ages through a wide range of social, creative, fitness and life skills clubs and provides much-needed respite for families.

She added: "I have never driven abroad so to complete this incredible challenge would be an achievement in itself, but to be able to raise a lot of money for this amazing local charity that means so much to me, would be fantastic."

Norfolk resident Nicola, 44, who is employed by Richardson's Boating Holidays, was the challenge instigator. She said: "I thought this experience would be tough to take on, something that would test us from the start to finish".

Allison jumped at the chance of doing it with her friend and using the opportunity to raise vital funds for Grove Cottage.

Croucher Needham Accountants, with offices in Bishop's Stortford, Saffron Walden and elsewhere in Beds, Herts and Essex are the pair's first business sponsors but they are looking for others to make their epic journey an equally big fundraising success.
