Apply now for free home energy improvements in East Herts

East Herts residents have until the end of December to apply for Government-funded grants to pay for home energy improvements.

Households struggling with energy bills can get support from the Sustainable Warmth programme, but time is running out.

Households with an annual income of less than £30,000 could be eligible for up to £10,000 if their home has low energy efficiency (determined by the EPC rating). In homes heated by alternative fuels such as oil or only electric heaters, residents could receive up to £25,000.

Improvements include insulation, low-carbon heating systems with an air-source heat pump, heating controls or energy-efficient hot water solutions, solar panels to generate free electricity or low-cost lighting.

Bishop’s Stortford’s Cllr Graham McAndrew, East Herts Council's executive member for environmental sustainability, said: “For residents on low incomes in hard-to-heat homes, this cold spell shows it’s really important to think ahead to next winter.

"This funding will help those struggling with energy bills to make vital improvements to their homes so they can look forward to cheaper bills and a warmer home. A more energy-efficient home helps residents to stay warm, save money and cut carbon emissions.

“We’re working with trustworthy and professional suppliers from across our region to deliver these works over the coming months.

“Anyone who thinks they may be eligible – as well as landlords, friends and neighbours of vulnerable residents – should get in touch now.”
