Nigel Farage's Brexit Party will take on the might of the Conservatives in the Hertford and Stortford constituency in the General Election on December 12.

Tony Gould was revealed on Monday (Nov 4) as one of the 600 picked from an alleged 3,000 hopefuls to fight the election, calling for a "clean-break Brexit". His name was confirmed by the Brexit Party press office in an email to the Indie on Tuesday (Nov 5).

Mr Gould was previously an ardent advocate for the UK Independence Party, but followed his leader in jumping ship for the new organisation formed in April.

He did, however, contest the European Parliament election in May as a UKIP candidate in the South East, but failed to secure a seat in a poll which wiped out the party. It lost all 24 of its MEPs while the Brexit Party secured 29.

Mr Gould was UKIP's candidate for Ipswich in the 2017 General Election, taking third place in a seat Labour won from the Conservatives with a 4.7% swing. He got 1,372 votes or 2.7% – a 9% drop for the party on 2015's result.

Before the poll, he told the Ipswich Star he had lived in the Suffolk county town for more than 40 years and worked for a major company there.

He told voters there he wanted Britain to leave the EU as quickly as possible and was keen to see a reduction in the amount of money spent on international aid.

Mr Gould faces a tough task in Hertford and Stortford, where the Conservatives have picked Julie Marson to defend the 19,035 majority of Mark Prisk, who is standing down after 18 years. In 2017, he secured 60.3% of the votes (36,184) and UKIP did not field a challenger.

In 2015, Adrian Baker took third place for UKIP, trailing behind the Tories and Labour but forcing the Liberal Democrats into fourth place.

On Thursday, December 12, Mr Gould will also face Labour candidate Chris Vince, the Green Party's Lucy Downes and Liberal Democrat Chris Lucas.
