The Government has recognised Harlow & Gilston Garden Town as one of the largest growth and regeneration projects in the UK by awarding almost £700,000 funding.

The Homes England money is part of a £15m funding pot to support the delivery of thousands of new homes in new communities across England.

Harlow and Gilston was designated as a garden town with 23,000 dwellings by the Department for Homes, Communities and Local Government in January 2017.

It will encompass Harlow, together with new strategic development sites to the north, east, south and west of the existing new town. They include a string of new settlements to the north in East Herts where Places for People plans 8,500 new homes in six villages in a scheme known as Gilston Park Estate and Taylor Wimpey North Thames has submitted an outline planning application for a seventh village of 1,500 properties.

Garden town director Naisha Polaine said: "We're delighted that Homes England and the Department of Levelling Up, Homes and Communities continue to be supportive of our vision for the future.

"Five councils (East Herts, Harlow and Epping Forest district council plus Herts and Essex county councils) united by a collective goal of sustainable local growth and creating new opportunities is something that local residents in East Herts, Harlow and Epping Forest can be very excited about.

"We are making great progress towards garden town delivery and this summer will be another exciting time with the garden town continuing to consult and engage with residents and ensuring they're informed and involved in Harlow & Gilston every step of the way."

Housing Minister Stuart Andrew said: "Building beautiful new homes in the places they are most needed lies at the heart of the Government's levelling up mission.

"Garden villages and towns are perfect examples of the vibrant, green communities we want to see right across the country and today's funding will allow us to work hand-in-hand with local leaders and industry to deliver the high-quality new homes that we need."
