LEARN MOREThe Edwardian tiled roof of Herts and Essex High School is to be refurbished.
East Herts Council has granted planning permission for the work to the Warwick Road secondary's main building, which dates back to 1910 and is in Bishop's Stortford's conservation area.
That means "any proposed development should preserve or enhance the character, appearance and special interest of the conservation area".
The roof is in such poor condition that leaks are causing internal damage and staff sometimes have to close off the library and old hall.
The proposed solution is to refurbish the roof to make it watertight while retaining as many of the original tiles as possible.
