Pupils and staff at Thorley Hill Primary School have a special reason to get involved in charity Brain Tumour Research's annual Wear a Hat Day.

The fundraising event on Friday March 25 was organised by Karen Price, a Year 3 teacher at the school in Park Lane, Bishop's Stortford, whose son Billy underwent successful brain tumour surgery 10 years ago as a teenager.

The children enjoyed wearing hats of all shapes and sizes in exchange for a donation to help fund vital work to find a cure for brain tumours. "Some of them even made their own hat-tastic creations!" said Karen.

Billy is now 25 and works in recruitment in Sheffield.

"He and I climbed Ben Nevis last May so he's pretty much fully recovered, though that's not to say it wasn't difficult," said his mother. "We sent the pic to his brain surgeon, who was delighted!

"Advances in brain tumour research enabled Billy's condition to be diagnosed and treated successfully. Our family was very lucky, but brain tumours kill more children and adults under the age of 40 than any other cancer, so fundraising for this medical research is so important."

Thorley Hill raised around £400. "Many thanks to all the children and staff who took part and the parents who donated so generously," said Karen.

Her two other children have also grown and flown the family nest in Sawbridgeworth: Louisa, 27, is a vet in Suffolk while younger son James, 21, is in his last year at university in Exeter.

Karen and Louisa ran the Chelmsford Half Marathon and the Manchester Marathon in the space of a week last October and raised £1,700.
