Bishop's Stortford Goods Yard development: Have your say at webinar and special market stall outside Waterstones

The developer behind the £200m Goods Yard project in Bishop’s Stortford is inviting residents to have their say on the updated masterplan and next phase of development.

A community webinar and a stall at the town's market will take place in the week that new restrictions for motorists around the railway station come into force as developer Solum proposes major alterations to the regeneration project, with an extra 102 homes on a smaller site.

Since receiving planning permission for the scheme in July 2018, Solum – a partnership between Network Rail and Kier Property – has delivered a new bus route connecting Station Road and Dane Street to London Road, a multi-storey car park, taxi/drop-off bays and 'public realm' improvements.

The first phase of 323 apartments in two blocks, being built by Bellway, is nearing completion, with properties already available for purchase.

A revised masterplan for the wider site was approved by East Herts Council in February. Solum is now consulting on the next phase of development, which will provide:

• A further 420 homes, making 743 in total

• A second multi-storey car park

• Better pedestrian and cycle links from the station to the town centre and river

• A new riverside walk

• Landscaped open space

Solum will be holding a community webinar on Wednesday May 4, from 6pm to 7pm. This will consist of a presentation outlining the updated plans, a Q&A session and a chance to meet the project team. You can register your online attendance at https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_nOgIUrVxRhafXvMwUgprQg.

And on Saturday May 7 you can meet the team on a market stall on South Street, outside Waterstones, between 10am and 2pm. Information is also available on the dedicated project website at www.goodsyardsite.co.uk.

Simon Dunlop, senior development manager at Solum, said: “We’ve been listening to feedback from residents for the last six years and their views have helped shape the development.

“The revised scheme will deliver improved accessibility, enhanced communal landscaping and a wider choice of properties for people to call home, all set within an attractive riverside environment."

The original masterplan contained a Premier Inn hotel but that is no longer happening.

"A hotel remains part of our plans and we are continuing to positively engage with the market to secure an operator," said Mr Dunlop.

“We wish to update people on these latest plans and answer any questions they may have about the revised scheme. A planning application for our revised proposals for the next phase of development will be submitted shortly."

Solum is a £500m joint venture between Network Rail and Kier Property to bring private investment into the rail network by generating funds from the development of under-used railway land. As well as the Stortford Goods Yard scheme, the partnership is delivering a project at Guildford in Surrey. It has completed schemes at Christchurch in Dorset, Epsom in Surrey, Haywards Heath in West Sussex, Twickenham in west London and two developments at Walthamstow in north-east London.
